A new selective medium for isolating Pseudomonas spp. from water.

A new medium, pseudomonas selective isolation agar, was developed to isolate Pseudomonas spp. from water. It consists of 350 micrograms of nitrofurantoin per ml and 2 micrograms of crystal violet per ml in a nutrient agar base. It is more selective for Pseudomonas spp. than are available commercial media. Its ingredients are inexpensive and readily available, and it is easy to prepare.

New selective medium for isolating Clostridium difficile from faeces.

AIMS To compare CCFA (cycloserine, cefoxitin fructose agar) with a new selective medium CDMN (containing cysteine hydrochloride, norfloxacin, and moxalactam) for the isolation of Clostridium difficile after direct faecal culture. METHODS The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of norfloxacin was determined for 64 strains of C difficile, 17 strains of other Clostridium sp, and 66 various is...

Selective Medium for Isolating Phanerochaete chrysosporium from Soil.

A selective medium was developed that is capable of isolating Phanerochaete chrysosporium from soil. This medium contains 15 ppm of benomyl (15 mug g) and 550 ppm of streptomycin sulfate in 2% malt agar and is held at 39 degrees C after inoculation. P. chrysosporium was isolated from three nonsterile forest soils to which the fungus had been added. These soils contained large microbial populati...

A selective medium for isolating Campylobacter jejuni/coli.

Skirrow's medium is effective for isolating Campylobacters from human faeces but is less suitable for animal and environmental specimens owing to the presence of contaminating species. After determining the sensitivity of 104 strains of Campylobacters to several antimicrobial agents, used singly and in various combinations, a selective medium incorporating polymixin, rifampicin, trimethoprim an...
